The Environment Agency has received two Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles to strengthen its national incident response fleet, with a special focus on emergency operations related to flooding and large-scale environmental events.
The Unimogs will be used for the rapid transport of excavators, pumps, generators, fuel cells and other essential equipment to critical locations across the country. Thanks to their high off-road capability and ability to ford flooded areas, the vehicles can access difficult terrain and remote regions where conventional trucks are unable to operate.

The vehicles were configured specifically to meet the requirements of emergency response missions. Among the adaptations, compliance with ADR regulations stands out, allowing the safe transport of large fuel cells required for the continuous operation of pumps and generators during prolonged incidents. High ground clearance, portal axles and the advanced all-wheel-drive system ensure superior mobility on extreme terrain, while the high towing capacity enables the transport of heavy equipment.
The acquisition followed a tender process that sought an off-road commercial vehicle capable of operating both off-road and on public roads under a commercial operator’s license. According to the agency, the Unimog was the only platform to fully meet these requirements, combining extreme performance with regulatory compliance.
The sale, technical support and specialized training for delivery were carried out by South Cave Tractors Ltd, an authorized Unimog dealer and bodybuilder.
Ross Paterson, head of special trucks at Daimler Truck UK, stated that the addition of the two Unimogs will significantly expand the Environment Agency’s ability to respond quickly to incidents in locations that require specialized equipment, highlighting the quality of the support and training provided.
Abbie Levitt, from South Cave Tractors, emphasized that the project was developed from the initial tender phase to meet the agency’s high operational and safety requirements. According to her, seeing the vehicles in operation confirms that the proven off-road capability of the Unimog can be combined with compliance with the rigorous safety standards applicable to commercial vehicles.

With the incorporation of these new vehicles, the Environment Agency strengthens its ability to protect communities, infrastructure and the environment during emergency situations, especially in scenarios of severe flooding and limited access.
